Egg allergy and its complications in children

Egg allergy is the most common type of allergy reported among children.

It usually appears in early childhood. Fortunately, most children outgrow this type of allergy by the time they reach school age. However, as long as a child has allergy symptoms to eggs or foods containing eggs, they should be excluded from their diet.

In typical cases, egg whites cause allergic reactions, but egg yolks can also act as allergens.

It is also possible that raw, undercooked, or small amounts of eggs in the diet can cause an allergic reaction.

Once your baby is 6 months old, and continues to be breastfed, you should start experimenting with different types of foods, including boiled eggs. It is very important that your baby eat boiled eggs, as raw eggs can contain bacteria.

As with all new foods, it is best to try boiled eggs without any other foods or, at the very least, with foods that the child is already familiar with. In such a case, it is easy to detect any adverse reactions that may indicate an allergy.

Egg allergy symptoms usually begin within minutes of eating eggs or foods containing eggs. Sometimes allergy symptoms can be delayed for up to several hours.

Mild symptoms include:

they became hives,

swelling of the face, lips, or eyelids,

nasal congestion, runny nose or sneezing,

thrush in the mouth,

digestive problems: abdominal cramps, nausea, or vomiting.

In more severe cases, signs of anaphylaxis resembling an asthma attack may develop, including:

difficulty breathing or severe shortness of breath and wheezing,

swelling of the tongue or throat,

hoarseness or difficulty speaking,

Wheezing or persistent cough,

paleness of the skin and sticky sweat,

dizziness or a sharp drop in blood pressure.

It is important to know that the food label may not list eggs directly as an ingredient, but rather the proteins contained in them, such as albumin, globulin, leucitol, livetin, lysozyme, vitelline, words starting with the prefixes "ova" or "ovo" (e.g. ovalbumin, ovoglobulin). Be wary of these ingredients as well.
