Erdogan: The opening of the "Zangezur Corridor" will be an important step in strengthening the peace agreement

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, returning from Washington, where he visited to participate in the summit of NATO heads of state and government, answered journalists' questions on the plane, writes ermenihaber.am.

One of the journalists asked: "The president has changed in Iran, Pashinyan in Armenia is making sentences in favor of peace. Where will the Turkey-Azerbaijan perspective bring peace in the Caucasus... In this context, what do you say about the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace treaty and Iran's position regarding the Zangezur Corridor? You hinted that when Armenia and Azerbaijan sign a peace treaty, there will be a completely peaceful atmosphere in that region and maybe the Armenia-Turkey border will be opened. Is it possible to think about it?'

Erdogan replied:

"Why shouldn't we think? In other words, we have already told Pashinyan everything about this. Now we must set all sails towards peace. We hope that permanent peace will be established between Azerbaijan and Armenia soon. Turkey wholeheartedly supports that peace. The opening of the "Zangezur Corridor" will be an important step in the consolidation and completion of this peace agreement. These steps will make a positive contribution to the prosperity and peace of not only Azerbaijan, but also Armenia, Turkey and other countries in the region. We hope for good news from this region, it is important that other countries take a similar approach and contribute to the peace process."

Erdogan also noted that "Zangezur Corridor" was not discussed in the meeting with the Iranian president.

"We only discussed how he won the elections," he noted. The Turkish president also expressed his intention to strengthen Turkish-Iranian relations, saying:

Zangezur Corridor is a strategic corridor that will benefit everyone, especially Azerbaijan, Armenia and Iran, and when this corridor is operational, both Iran and Azerbaijan will be relieved. This corridor is very important for the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. Hopefully, when the railway system is launched there, Azerbaijan will be much calmer."
