"Fact". Superpower competition enters the Caucasus
"Fact" daily writes: "The American media and expert circles have been addressing the situation in the South Caucasus more and more recently, but it is noteworthy that the context of these publications is mostly identical. In particular, one of the American periodicals recently published an article entitled "Superpower rivalry enters the Caucasus". This publication is first of all remarkable because the authors are well-known American experts, led by a man who has held high-ranking positions during the presidency of Donald Trump.
We are talking about William Wolf, who was the State Department's general counsel and deputy assistant secretary of defense. The analysis refers to the themes of Armenia's departure from the CSTO and orientation towards the West. Moreover, withdrawal from the CSTO is considered as an event that will take place in the near future, even almost a reality. It is noted that the USA should significantly support Armenia in this matter. However, it is noteworthy that there is almost no mention of what leaving the CSTO and falling into the arms of the West will bring to Armenia. Instead, it is described in detail what it will give the USA, that is, what the USA needs. It turns out that it should, and how it should. According to the authors, thus, Armenia's withdrawal and turn to the West will provide an "invaluable opportunity" for the United States to strengthen its position in the region, "which will benefit America's long-term interests." And attention... one of the most important points. Bringing Armenia into the Western ranks will allow the US to maintain the real threat on Russia's southern borders and neutralize the Russian military presence in Armenia.
Finally, according to the authors, all of this will make it possible to complicate China's plans to unify the region under the "One Belt, One Road" initiative, as well as allow the US to reduce its dependence on Turkey. In short, the Americans have actually started to "play" more openly and clearly declare their real interests, where there is no place for the interests and security of Armenia. Exclusively American interests, American interests, the main meaning of which is to make Armenia the focus of a clash between major geopolitical players, even at the cost of Armenia's sovereignty and territorial losses."
