Unknown persons set fire to the "Ararat" Armenian cemetery in Fresno, where Tehleryan and Saroyan are buried.

On the evening of April 12, unknown persons set fire to the "Ararat" Armenian cemetery in Fresno (California, USA), reports "Zartonk".

Eight trees were set on fire near the main entrance of the cemetery on Friday evening. The police and firefighters were promptly informed about this. So far, no one has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

According to the newspaper, since January of this year, this is the sixth arson in the cemetery, which was established in 1885. As a result of the incidents, 19 cypress trees were burned.

The administration is concerned about the incidents, as it considers them targeted attacks.

It is reminded that many prominent Armenian figures are buried in this cemetery, including Soghomon Tehleryan, William Saroyan, Victor Maghakyan and others.

The administration did not rule out that the arson was related to the upcoming day of commemoration of the victims of the Armenian Genocide, which is celebrated every year on April 24.

According to preliminary data, replacement of trees will cost approximately 25 thousand. dollar.
